Always admired Michael Oldfield’s work. I was quite obsessed with it as a young man. I listen to it now as I age. I hope I understand it better now. I think he paints with sound. He can bring his thoughts to life. The longer pieces of his music are very beautiful and takes you on a journey. He lets the instruments do the talking.

I have the vinyl from years ago but no turntable anymore. Why can’t I find the album online on the usual places?

Above some skill level, every guitarist is "the best in the world". There are a bunch that are, but there is not a best one. And there never will be. Unfortunately for those who have ever claimed it, there is no "best guitar in the world" contest that has a winner every year. There are so many skills to evaluate (most of them unquantifiable) to even come up with who is a better player than anyone else at any given time. Fortunately for a few of us, this is a good result: you can have as many "best guitars in the world" as you want, there's no way to debate it, and you can change them as much as you want. With that out of the way: Mr Oldfield isn't best known as a guitarist, but as the 'Tubular Bells' guy (or maybe the guy from that creepy Exorcist soundtrack). For those of us who follow his career, this is a frustrating feeling. Like the behemoth of a musical mind he is, he chose the guitar as the first instrument to translate his universe to the world. If you are able to read this language, you will definitely be amazed in many ways by his gifts and abilities when he uses this tool, not only as a guitarist, but as a stratospheric musician. That's why some of us think he's "underrated", when we should be saying "he deserves more attention", but as y'all probably know, this requires a step beyond musical knowledge on the part of the audience (if you've ever had an interest to play any instrument, you know what I mean) and that will never happen. To me he is truly "the greatest guitarist in the world", like David Gilmour, Stewart Copeland, Mark Knopfler,... you name it, every and each one of them is. Finally, there's one more point I'd like to share with you all: to this day, as an Oldfield fan of almost 50 years, I can't remember any piece of music I've ever heard where a guitar sound made me say, " this is Mike Oldfield,” and it wasn’t him. Never. Although I had never heard that cut from him before. The poetry he is able to steal from a humble guitar with his bare fingers has a unique signature that is impossible to fake. And I (me) can't say that about the other players, not even when each and every one of them being "the best guitarist in the world" for me too. (If you've made it this far, sorry for the length 😉😇)

Most brilliant version of this song

In the Eighties, a friend of mine, who had many of the same musical tastes as me, briskly waved off Mike Oldfield. I never actually asked him why, but I can probably guess. He's fairly religious, and may have balked at the association with the Exorcist soundtrack. He may have thought Oldfield was into the occult. I think that would bother me a bit, too, if that were the case, but I don't think he is. There's also that guitar style, which does sound a bit demonic, if you want to think of it that way. But I really don't, so that likewise doesn't bother me.

This song is unusual in having the two main vocalists taking turns. Works well. Discovery is such an under-appreciated album.
